Mayor Anthony Silva says he personally doesn't like the idea of adding chemicals to Stockton's drinking water. This is what he wrote in a facebook post over the weekend:
“We will immediately host a Town Hall Meeting on Stockton Water by next week. We will invite the Public Utilities Director and his staff. We will also invite Water Quality specialists from the County and State.”
Currently the city's Delta Water Treatment Plant uses chlorine to purify water. A new method will blend chlorine with ammonia to kill bacteria and viruses. The chemical combination is called chloramines.
Opponents claim chloramines cause rashes and may lead to cancer.
The City of Stockton is currently scheduled to change its drinking water disinfection process for residents on the North side of the city by the end of the month with the possibility of expanding in the future.
