New data out today show the December jobless rate in the Sacramento area fell to its lowest level in nearly a decade.
December unemployment in the four-county Sacramento region was 5.5 percent. That's the lowest it's been in the month of December since 2006 when it was at 4.6 percent.
The state Employment Development Department says last month's 5.5 percent unemployment rate was unchanged from November.
But it was down from a year earlier by nearly one percent.
Most of the jobs that grew in December were in leisure and hospitality. That industry added 1,600 jobs over the month. It was also the sector that saw the largest year-over-year growth, of 11,400 jobs.
Other sectors that added jobs in December were: retail, trade, transportation and utilities. Industries that saw job losses were government, construction and agriculture.
Government led the decline by shedding 3,300 jobs last month.
The state Employment Development Department says most of those lost government jobs were in educational services, which is typical for December when schools are on holiday-break.
Placer County had the region's lowest unemployment rate in December of 4.6 percent. Yolo County had the highest, at 6.6 percent.
