(AP) - Rooftop solar companies want to take their fight over new solar rates to voters.
A petition filed Monday by the No Solar Tax PAC would return Nevada to old, lower rates and remove any cap on the number of solar users statewide. The measure could go to the ballot if supporters gather enough signatures.
Nevada lawmakers passed a bill nearly unanimously last spring directing regulators to set new rates for customers with solar panels who sell energy back to the utility.
The law came as Nevada approached a cap on net metering.
Regulators approved new rates that raise base charges for solar customers and reduce reimbursements.
Commissioners say it phases out subsidies traditional customers pay to support rooftop solar installations. Rooftop solar companies say it makes their business model unworkable.
