(AP) — Two Native American tribes with lucrative gambling enterprises in California are opposing a Democratic lawmaker's plan to legalize fantasy sports betting.
The Sacramento Bee first reported Wednesday that the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and Morongo Band of Mission Indians have sent letters to Democratic Assemblyman Adam Gray of Merced.
Gray is the author of AB1437, which would legalize fantasy sports.
San Manuel Chairwoman Lynn Valbuena wrote that Gray's proposal has moved quickly through the Legislature with very little deliberation compared to the vetting process for online poker.
It passed the Assembly last month with only one vote opposed.
Because the proposal would impose an income tax on fantasy winnings, it needs support from two-thirds of lawmakers to reach the desk of Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown.
