(AP) - Inspections conducted after a deadly balcony collapse in Berkeley last year show that about 400 multi-unit buildings in the city required repairs.
The Contra Costa Times reports Friday that's about a fifth of 2,200 buildings inspected. The information is part of a staff report recommending changes to its inspection rules.
The collapse last June of an apartment balcony during a birthday party killed five Irish students and injured seven people. A city investigation later revealed that wooden supporting beams on the balcony had rotted through from water damage.
City officials in July required property owners to hire a licensed expert to inspect balconies, decks, outside landings and stairs, and other weather-exposed areas within six months.
The apartment complex where the students fell was eight years old.
