The battle over the Second Amendment has returned to the California Legislature. An Assembly committee approved several new gun control measures Tuesday on party-line votes.
One measure would prohibit tools like “bullet buttons” that critics say are used to evade California’s ban on assault rifles.
“The gun manufacturers have essentially made a mockery of our laws,” says Levine.
Democratic Assemblyman Mark Levine is the bill’s author.
“And if we are going to lead the nation, we need to strengthen our laws to make sure that no one can evade them.” says Levine.
Other bills would ban semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines and limit gun sales to one per person per month.
Sam Paredes with Gun Owners of California says the proposals violate the Second Amendment – and wouldn’t be effective anyway.
“We should be banning Porsches. Far more people die driving Porsches than they do with semi-automatic firearms that these folks are trying to ban,” says Paredes. “Their goal is to ban the private possession of firearms. And that’s not gonna happen in America and it’s not gonna happen here in California.”
The measures next move to another Assembly committee. Governor Jerry Brown has questioned the need for stronger state gun controls.
Democratic Assemblyman Miguel Santiago’s measure would limit gun purchases to one per person, per month.
“Technically, a person – after a background check and waiting for ten days – can walk into any gun shop and buy over 100 guns," says Santiago.
