New data show January's unemployment rate in the Sacramento area, of 5.5 percent, was a nearly 10 year low for the month.
"Looking back in January, it looks like the last time it's been that low was in 2007 at 5.4 percent," says Cara Welch with the state Employment Development Department.
Welch says the region lost 8,500 jobs between December and January, mostly because stores laid off workers who had been hired for the holiday shopping season.
"We did see a decline in retail trade which declined by 5,400 jobs," explains Welch.
But those declines were offset by job gains in: government, education and manufacturing.
January's unemployment rate of 5.5 percent was unchanged from December. It was down from 6.7 percent in January of 2015.
In the four-county area, Placer County has the lowest unemployment rate at 4.7 percent and Yolo County has the highest at 6.7 percent.
