(AP) - An Iraqi-born Palestinian man previously charged with lying to investigators about traveling to a Middle Eastern war zone has now been charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists.
A federal grand jury in Chicago on Thursday indicted 23-year-old Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab on the new and more serious charge.
Al-Jayab previously lived in the Midwest. He was arrested in California in January on one federal charge that he lied about traveling to Syria to fight against the government. That charge carries a sentence of up to eight years in prison.
The new charge carries a maximum 15-year term.
A Houston man charged from the same investigation, Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan, faces up to 25 years in prison on allegations he attempted to support the Islamic State organization.
