Cause Of Last Week's BART Power Surge Still Unknown

(AP) — Officials with BART say they still don't know what caused a power surge that damaged dozens of cars on the Pittsburg-Bay Point line last week.

KNTV-TV reports that BART officials on Thursday said they hadn't identified the cause of a track power-surge problem that took out 50 BART cars last week north of the North Concord Station, causing service between that station and Pittsburg-Bay Point to cease to avoid further damage to the cars.

The transit agency announced that it has created a new team of six employees to try to find the root of the cause and also brought in outside consultants and upgraded diagnostic equipment.

BART officials say parts needed to repair the damaged trains may come in about four weeks, down from an initial estimate of 22 weeks.
