(AP) — Bay Area Rapid Transit officials say a $2 million new train car overshot the end of the track and plowed into a mound of dirt while being tested at a Hayward facility.
BART spokesman Taylor Huckaby tells the San Francisco Chronicle officials are investigating whether an operator mistake or a system error caused the glitch Friday.
Huckaby says the train kept going after a straight track ended, causing some of the train to go into the dirt.
He says only the operator, who was being trained, was inside the train, which was traveling at less than 10 mph.
Huckaby says there were no injuries and the train was not significantly damaged.
BART officials say that much of the infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life. A new fleet of train cars could start carrying passengers by the end of the year.
