Calaveras County has seen a growing rush to buy land as marijuana growers seek new sites for cultivation but the county may seek to ban most marijuana grows.
The Calaveras County Planning Commission is meeting Thursday to draft a proposed ordinance on marijuana. Recommendations could include a ban on new marijuana farms.
Planning Commissioner David Tunno wants to see a complete ban including backyard grows for personal use.
According to Tunno, so many farms have popped up with armed guards that people feel threatened.
“It has disrupted their lives completely, they are afraid to go outside, they are being intimidated,” he says.
Tunno proposes allowing only 3 plants for personal use to be grown indoors.
“Assuming marijuana has a legitimate medical purpose, this limits it to the medical use,” Tunno says.
The planning commission will send their recommendations to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors which will make the final decision.
