(AP) — A Reno doctor arrested in California last week is returning to Nevada to face federal charges in an investigation into a prescription drug ring prosecutors say was operating a "pill mill" out of his family practice and a Reno car dealership.
Dr. Robert Rand waived extradition at a hearing Friday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.
He's accused of writing Oxycodone and other painkiller prescriptions for people who didn't need them, including a 33-year-old Reno man who died from an overdose in October.
Michael Yenick's family filed a wrongful death suit against Rand in Washoe District Court on Thursday.
Justice Department spokeswoman Natalie Collins says U.S. marshals will transport Rand to Reno at an unspecified time. He's expected to appear at a bail hearing in federal court in Reno sometime next week.
