Long delays are expected over the next two weeks for people traveling on westbound Interstate 80 at Newcastle.
Liza Whitmore, with Caltrans, says one lane of the freeway will be closed around the clock as part of a project to lower the roadway under the Newcastle Union Pacific Railroad bridge.
"That is to comply with new federal requirements for interstate overcrossings that need to be at least 16 feet, six inches high," she says.
Work to lower the roadway or raise overpasses has already been completed on eight other sites along Interstate 80.
Delays from 30 to 45 minutes are expected during the morning commute. People coming home on Sunday from the Sierra could see delays between one and two hours.
