Illegal fireworks are a problem every year resulting in fires, injuries and property damage. The City of Manteca will be taking some of the pop out of illegal fireworks this 4th of July. A new smartphone app could help tell police who lit the fuse.
The fireworks industry is coming out with a free smartphone app that allows the public to record the illegal fireworks being shot off along with the location and then sending that video to the police department.
According to Manteca Fire Marshal Lantz Rey, Manteca will be one of the first of 50 cities to use the app.
“This allows the public to help us kind of enforce this ordinance because this is a wide spread complaint it’s not something a few people are complaining about,” Rey says.
In Manteca, police or firefighters had to catch the violators in the act before they could issue a citation.
But next month, police will be able to use the video from the app or cite property owners if they find evidence of illegal fireworks.
