California Attorney General Kamala Harris has won the endorsement of Gov. Jerry Brown in the campaign for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat – just two weeks before the June 7th primary.
“As her client, I know what a hell of a lawyer she is!“ Brown says, drawing chuckles from a small crowd at the California Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento Monday. “She’s strong, she’s intelligent, she knows what she’s doing.”
Harris isn’t the only Democrat in the race. Orange County Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is also running – and polls suggest the two might both advance to the November general election under California’s “top two” primary system. The three most prominent Republicans are all trailing Harris and Sanchez by wide margins.
The Sanchez campaign responded by saying the congresswoman is a “proven leader” with the “experience, courage and conviction to be California’s next U.S. senator.”
