The Delta Blood Bank in Stockton is putting out a call for donations as their blood supply has dipped to a critical level. Daily donations have dropped by 50 percent.
Delta Blood Bank serves 11 hospitals in El Dorado, Stanislaus, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and San Joaquin County.
Normally it sees 200 to 250 donations per day, but donations always start dropping as summer approaches.
Blood Bank Marketing Director Annie Havens says the shooting in Orlando highlights the need to have enough blood on hand.
“When a tragedy hits, the blood has to be on the shelf already, it has to be processed and tested and labelled and bagged, it has to be there already,” says Havens.
According to Havens, one donation can save 3 lives.
She also says, “It’s a good thing to do, it’s a civic duty and if volunteer donors don’t donate, we don’t have blood, there’s no other way to get it.”
A major blood drive is scheduled for this Friday at the Delta Blood Bank in Stockton and the Three Amigos Auto Center in Modesto.
