Reuters is reporting that Silicon Valley company Atieva wants to build an electric car factory in Northern California. And it looks like Sacramento and Tracy are the two finalists for the $530 million manufacturing plant.
The Sacramento Business Journal's Managing Editor of Digital News Christopher Arns says besides Aerojet, which still employs 1,000 people in Rancho Cordova although it's headquarters is now in Southern California, Sacramento doesn't really have any big public companies.
"And our manufacturing sector has shrunk over the years," says Arns. "So something like this could really put Sacramento on the map. And who knows, perhaps maybe even attract other big name manufacturers or at least companies that would directly support this factory if it indeed comes here."
At its peak, the proposed factory would eventually churn out 130,000 cars a year.
