The Rim Fire burned more than 257,000 acres in 2013, making it the largest wildfire ever in California’s Sierra Nevada. The fire and the burn area still draw a lot of curiosity from tourists heading to Yosemite National Park.
The Stanislaus National Forest has assembled a driving audio tour for people interested in learning more about the fire and its effect on the landscape.
The damage is hard to miss from the Rim of the World overlook.
“It burned everything that you can see from that one point," says Dusty Vaughn with the Groveland Ranger District in the Stanislaus National Forest. "Every time we’re there maintaining the site or talking to folks everyone is coming up and asking us what happened, what is this?”
The 11-stop audio tour includes stories from firefighters, visitor memories about campsites that burned, and environmental lessons about the aftermath of wildfires. You can download the tour at the Stanislaus National Forest website.
