(AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has reached a deal with lawmakers on proposed legislation to improve transparency and make other reforms at the embattled California Public Utilities Commission.
The proposed changes announced Monday would scale back the CPUC's authority and require more public disclosure and participation in its proceedings.
The sweeping package is backed by three Democratic lawmakers who have proposed measures cracking down on the CPUC. The Democratic governor vetoed six CPUC bills last year, saying lawmakers tried to do too much at once and didn't provide adequate funding.
Critics allege the CPUC is too cozy with the companies it regulates. It also was accused of being slow to respond to a massive gas leak at Porter Ranch in Southern California.
