Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has launched a new partnership that will improve education, health care, employment and housing opportunities for Oak Park residents.
The city is partnering with UC Davis, community members, and dozens of other organizations to transform the neighborhood by creating a cradle-to-career pipeline, improving access to health care and enabling more people to become homeowners.
Tamika L’Ecluse is the president of Oak Park Neighborhood Association.
"All of the energy that everyone has put in and that everyone’s going to put in can finally be used cohesively and can show some real impact and results for the people in our community," says L'Ecluse.
Johnson says the city is applying for a federal grant that would provide about $30 million in funding. Recipients will be notified later this year.
Mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg says continuing what Mayor Kevin Johnson has started is key to improving the lives of area residents.
"The mayor has planted seeds in a whole host of areas but especially around Oak Park and young people," says Steinberg. "It’s going to be my job when we get this grant to make sure it’s successfully implemented and that we build on it and that’s what I intend to do.
Dozens of organizations have joined the partnership including Sacramento State and University of the Pacific.
