The latest unemployment data show the Sacramento area jobless rate in June was 5.6. That was up from 4.7 percent in May.
The state Employment Development Department says job gains in leisure-and-hospitality, retail, and government were offset by losses in private education and health services. June's jobless rate of 5.6 percent was down from June of 2015 when unemployment in the region was at 5.8 percent.
Meanwhile, the statewide unemployment rate edged up to 5.4 percent in June. The rate derived from a federal survey of 5,500 California households was 5.2 percent in May and 6.2 percent in June 2015.
But the department says a separate survey of 58,000 businesses shows California's nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 40,300 in June.
