The Sacramento City Council, and Mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg, have decided to punt on the question of who should be the next city manager.

Steinberg had joined current Mayor Kevin Johnson and the city council in searching for a replacement for City Manager John Shirey, who's retiring at the end of the year.
But Wednesday, Johnson, Steinberg and council members announced that Assistant City Manager Howard Chan will serve as interim city manager and the city will resume its search once Steinberg takes office in December.
