A major thoroughfare in South Sacramento County and Elk Grove will be closed to through traffic starting Monday at 8 a.m.
"Monday morning is going to be a traffic mess at Calvine Road and Elk Grove-Florin Road. You won't be able to go west past Elk Grove-Florin," says Michael Garcia with the Sacramento County Department of Transportation.
Garcia says Union Pacific Railroad asked for the road closure so that work crews can fix the railroad tracks.
"They're going to repair their tracks and then we'll have to put back asphalt afterwards so that the road matches the new level of the tracks," says Garcia.
"There actually's going to be a big hole in the ground," says Garcia. "The only thing that's going to be left will be the tracks the first day. So nobody can drive through it. Pedestrians can't even walk through it."
"People will be able to get to the businesses that are right there and we'll let people get to their homes," says Garcia. "But through traffic's going to be messed up for a good three or four days."
Calvine Road will be closed until Thursday at 5 p.m. from Power Inn Road to Elk Grove Florin Road. Detour signs and electronic message boards are in place to warn people.
