Sacramento Area High Schools Hold Mock Elections

Voters go to the polls in another six weeks. But for some high school students in Elk Grove, Election Day is Monday.

Students at Monterey Trail High School will be taking part in a mock election. It's being organized by the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections office. 

"It's a real ballot just like anyone of us would be voting in November," says Kim Nava with the county. "The voting booth look exactly like they would at a polling place. And the ballot boxes that take their ballots are the ones that they would see on Election Day as well. And what's really exciting for the students is that we post the election results on our website later that evening."

The county is holding more than 20 mock elections at area high schools through October 3rd. 

"We're doing this so that the students can become more educated and engaged in the voting process," says Nava. "And students are more apt to vote when they know what's involved in the voting process. And so we're hoping that that will help."

Students at Folsom High School last week voted to put Republican Donald Trump into the White House. The vote was 42 percent for Trump and 30 percent for his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

At Cordova High School last week, students voted for a Clinton presidency. The vote was 39 percent for Clinton and 23 percent for Trump.
