Beware of bears over the next month-and-a-half. That's the warning to people who live in parts of Reno and Carson City.
Because of the wet winter in 2015, bears have been finding a lot more nuts and berries to eat in the Sierra - away from people.
"But that could change and it could change very quickly," says Chris Healy with the Nevada Department of Wildlife. He says some hard freezes are coming up and that means the bears' natural foods could begin to dissipate quickly.
The bears are also heading into their hyperphagia period. That's when they're on the lookout for more food as they get ready for winter hibernation.
"The bears will increase caloric intake from 2,500 to 3,000 calories a day all the way up to 25,000 to 30,000 a day," Healy explains.
"And because we have a bumper crop of fruit this year on people's fruit trees, mainly apples," says Healy, "we expect to see bears making their way down into these urban interface areas."
Including neighborhoods on the the west side of Reno and Carson City, also in the Minden and Gardnerville areas. Healy says people should remove fruit from their yards as soon as possible to avoid bumping into bears.
