A former Marine from Orangevale has pleaded guilty in a bizarre Vallejo kidnapping in which the victims at first were accused by police of concocting the abduction.
Thomas Johnson is Matthew Muller's defense attorney. Speaking outside the federal court in Sacramento, Johnson explained the rationale behind his client's guilty plea.
"Mr. Muller wanted to resolve the case. He did not want to have a trial where Ms. Huskins would testify. Mr. Muller was trying to show that he was accepting responsibility. We feel that this is the way that will someday open a door to him to return to society."
Denise Hoskins was safely dropped off in Huntington Beach two days after the kidnapping.
As part of the plea agreement, the U.S. Attorney recommended a 40 year sentence for Muller. But the judge will ultimately decide whether to follow that recommendation.
