(AP) - Authorities have identified a deputy killed while responding to a call about a disturbance in Northern California as 31-year-old Jack Hopkins.
The Modoc County Sheriff's Office says Hopkins joined the force last year.
The office says he leaves behind extended family and colleagues who will miss him.
The shooting Wednesday happened on County Road 115 in a rural area about 10 miles south of Alturas, California.
The office says other agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, the Alturas Police Department and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the scene when a call about an officer-involved shooting went out.
Hopkins is the fourth law enforcement officer in California to die in the line of duty in the last two weeks.
