(AP) - State transportation officials are set to blow up part of the old San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and drivers on the new span will be affected.
Caltrans has scheduled the demolition of a marine foundation on the old span for between 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Saturday. The San Francisco Chronicle
reports that crews will use 12,000 pounds of explosives to implode the foundation.
The California Highway Patrol will conduct traffic breaks to keep vehicles on the new span away from the blast site. The new bridge's bike path will be closed all day.
Caltrans first used the technique to blow up one of the old bridge's foundations in November and concluded that the implosion caused minimal environmental damage.
Six foundations are slated to be blown up next year and seven more in 2018.
