Caltrans has a traffic warning for Sacramento commuters this weekend: Stay away from westbound Interstate 80 from Longview Drive to just west of West El Camino Avenue.
Lane and ramp closures will be going into effect so that work crews can strip lanes. It's part of the 80 Across the Top construction project in North Sacramento.
Gilbert Mohtes-Chan with Caltrans says people who don't avoid the area are facing a long wait.
"We're looking at delays up to one hour," says Mohtes-Chan. "And that'll vary from different times during the peak hours during the weekend. So they should plan ahead and anticipate up to one hour delays."
He says people should consider alternate routes, like Business 80.
"Folks that have appointments should allow extra time," says Mohtes-Chan. "Or if they're traveling westbound 80 normally to get to the Sacramento International Airport they should also consider Business 80 or some other alternate routes."
The closures start tonight at 10 p.m. and go until Sunday at Noon.
80 Across the Top is a $133 million project to put in 10 miles of bus and carpool lanes and repave part of the highway. The new lanes are expected to open by mid-December.
