Organizers of the annual Sharing and Caring Coat, Blanket and Sock drive are hoping to collect as many as 10,000 items at this year's event in hope to keep the Stockton's poor and homeless warm for the winter in the city.
The first annual drive gathered over 5,000 items for 13,000 people.
In this fourth year, the need has nearly doubled, and 10,000 coats, blankets and socks are expected to go to 2,000 of the needy.
Deitra Kenoly heads up the effort on behalf of a dozen sponsors during the drive says that families will line up and be able to pick out what they need to stay warm.
“The kids themselves, they’re very excited at receiving coats," Kenoly says. "We get a lot of new coats that we give out. When they come in, they’re able to pick out what they want. They leave happy and that’s what makes it exciting for us.”
Kenoly says donations of new or gently used and clean coats, blankets and new socks can be dropped off from Monday until Dec. 15 at any Stockton fire station or Bank of Stockton branch.
She also says that on Saturday, Dec. 17, the items will be given out at the Stockton Arena from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
