Sacramento State Faces Possible Deficit

Sacramento State is looking at a $7.1 million deficit if no changes are made to Governor Jerry Brown's proposed budget.

Sac State President Robert Nelson painted the grim picture of funding for the Cal State system during his annual spring address Thursday morning. Nelson says under the worst case scenario each department would have to cut spending by nearly six percent.

"With these cuts we will have no money for new facilities, for infrastructure repair, no money to extend the graduation initiative and no money for enrollment growth," says Nelson. "Hence, we have frozen our enrollment and will continue to do so."

Nelson listed a number of positive steps the school has taken recently, including improving the four year graduation rate, diversifying the faculty and student body, and adding more classes.
