(AP) - A suicide barrier to be installed on the Golden Gate Bridge is expected to take four years to build and could disrupt traffic.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday that a Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District committee has recommended allocating $2 million to the California Highway Patrol to help with traffic flow while workers install the barrier. The barrier project is expected to start this year and be completed in 2021.
The Bridge District in 2014 approved a plan to fund 20-foot-wide metal suicide prevention nets.
More than 1,400 people have jumped to their deaths since the bridge opened in 1937. Most jumpers suffer a grisly death, with massive internal injuries, broken bones and skull fractures. Some die from internal bleeding. Others drown.
