Highways around the city of Stockton are going to get a Clean Sweep courtesy of Caltrans as part of a new program that starts next month to make Stockton beautiful.
Stockton’s Crosstown Freeway will be the first to get a makeover with graffiti and trash removal, roadway repair, and decorative landscaping.
Clean Sweep will bring art to the highway soundwalls with murals, enhanced LED lighting, and encourage the community to Adopt-a-Highway to keep them free of trash.
Greg Lawson with Caltrans says the project will take about a year and a half and give the city a new elegance.
“It just kind of makes Stockton a place that people really want to be part of and really makes Stockton beautiful.”
Lawson says Clean Sweep is a pilot program with Stockton first on the list.
“So, we hope to expand the project in areas like Lodi, as well as Manteca, and if it starts to catch on we hope to branch it out statewide.”
Lawson estimates Stockton’s beautification will cost about $600,000.
