An independent bookstore in Sacramento is moving. Taking its place will be another store that sells books, as well as vinyl records.
Dimple Records plans to fill the former Avid Reader spot on Broadway, next to its existing music, movies and video game store. The Avid Reader is moving three blocks away.
The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says Dimple is benefiting from renewed interest in vinyl records. And bookstores are defying predictions that they'd be crushed by online retailers.
"They're doing that largely by building a sense of community," says Sorich. "That includes hosting events, staffing stores with people who can give customers personal, face-to-face recommendations."
Dimple is planning a setup similar to what it has on Arden Way where the company has a book store with vinyl records and an adjacent building that sells movies, music and video games.
Kaiser Permanente is expanding its Downtown Sacramento presence. Sorich says Kaiser has signed a lease for a large space on G Street.
"The non-profit healthcare provider will fill 17,000 square feet at 906 G Street," says Sorich. "This building is mostly occupied by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. Kaiser has a 10-year lease and will take up the building's entire fifth floor."
Kaiser hasn't said yet what it will be doing in the space.
Last year, the company opened a sports medicine clinic in Golden 1 Center. It's also converting a building on J Street into medical offices. And Kaiser is planning to build a medical center in the railyards development that will replace the healthcare provider's Morse Avenue hospital in about six years.
Sacramento-based Seasons Coffee Roasters has announced plans for its first brick-and-mortar store. Sorich says Seasons started about two years ago as an Internet-based subscription and delivery service.
"It's now planning a cafe in the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts," says Sorich. "That building is better known as CLARA in midtown. And the cafe will sell coffee and light food items. It's expected to open this summer."
The building's other tenants include cultural and performing arts groups like the McKeever School of Irish Dance.
The cafe will be open to everyone...but its main clientele will likely be performers grabbing a bite to eat or a cup of coffee in between rehearsals and parents waiting for their kids in dance class.
And Sacramento landed on a national list this week. Travel guide publisher DK Eyewitness Travel says Sacramento is the second most overlooked city in America, behind Madison, Wisconsin. The list is intended to highlight cities that deserve to be more fully explored.
