The Sacramento Police Department has released video and audio of a violent confrontation between officers and a shirtless man challenging people to fight along Alhambra Boulevard a month ago.
The release comes after the Sacramento City Council implemented a new policy requiring police to release video of certain incidents within 30 days.
The confrontation with 34-year-old John Hernandez became physical right away. Officers tackled him, fought with him, tased him a number of times, and hit him with their batons ... with apparently no effect. Hernandez was finally subdued after other officers arrived on the scene.
He later became unresponsive and had to be rushed to the hospital where he remains. Police say he had a very high level of methamphetamine in his system at the time of the incident and only suffered superficial physical injuries.
The investigation into how the police handled the confrontation and arrest is ongoing and being handled by the City’s independent Office of Public Safety Accountability.
