One of the largest employers in Rancho Cordova says it plans to reduce its local workforce by 1,100 jobs over the next two years.
Aerospace and defense contractor Aerojet Rocketdyne says the decision is part of a cost-cutting measure.
Spokesman Glenn Mahone says nearly all of those workers will head to Alabama.
"Many of those jobs are being relocated to Huntsville where we will build a state-of-the-art facility down there and that's where our rocket shop is headquartered, and we will be transitioning and relocating many of the jobs here in Sacramento to Huntsville and then some also over to Canoga Park in L.A." says Mahone.
He also says roughly 300 jobs will remain in Rancho Cordova beyond 2019.
At its peak in the 1950s and 60s, the company employed some 20,000 people in the Sacramento area.
