Vaccination rates for California school kids are at their highest level since 2001. A controversial state law may be the reason 96 percent of kindergartners are now fully immunized.
The law was passed in 2015, after a measles outbreak linked to Disneyland sickened more than 150 people. It requires almost all California kids be vaccinated before they attend public or private schools. It eliminated a provision that allowed parents to seek personal and religious belief exemptions. Only medical exemptions are allowed now.
Opponents said removing the provision infringed on the rights of parents to make decisions for their kids. An attempt to repeal the law failed. It's now being challenged in court.
California is one of only three states to eliminate personal and religious exemptions.
