The California State Senate has unanimously approved a bill requiring passengers buckle up when riding in buses that are equipped with safety belts.
The law would also apply to bus drivers.
California would be the first state in the country to enact a mandatory restraint law for bus passengers and drivers.
The bill does not apply to school buses, which are covered by separate laws, and it doesn't require buses to be retrofitted with seatbelts.
New federal regulations require all new buses to have seatbelts.
