The only Republican state senator to vote this month in favor of raising the gas tax is getting hundreds of threatening messages.
Senator Anthony Cannella's office says the negative messaging campaign really took off on social media and the vast majority of people are from outside his district.
The Senator says he's had to take action to protect his family members.
His office says law enforcement at the state capitol has been made aware of the threats and CHP officers are making regular checks on his Ceres home.
Cannella says he stands behind his vote and believes it was the best move for his constituents.
As part of the deal, Cannella's district will get funding to pay for an extension of a Bay Area commuter train to Merced.
The bill is still awaiting the governor's signature.
