The Yuba City Police Department says an early Saturday morning security check ended with a shootout involving a man who ran from officers.
Officers say they entered the parking lot of the Econo Lodge on Palora Avenue in Yuba City at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when they saw a man leaning through the window of a vehicle.
They say the man ran when he saw police. A press release says, "shots were fired," but does not say who fired first.
The suspect, Joseph Sin, shot was shot and killed. The department says his gun was recovered at the scene. One officer received a non-life threatening gunshot wound, was treated at UC Davis, and was released. The department says his prognosis is "positive."
Sin was wanted on a $500,000 warrant for kidnapping in Marysville.
Yuba/Sutter County Officer-Involved Shooting Team will investigate.
The team is comprised of investigators from the police and sheriffs departments in Yuba and Sutter Counties. Members of the team who are from the Yuba City Police Deparment will not be part of the investigation, according to City spokesman Darin Gale.
This investigation will be conducted, "to verify and corroborate statements and validate evidence." The department says it will "provide (more) information once it will no longer compromise the teams ability to complete investigations."
The officer had been with the department since 2015.
