This Saturday will be a red-letter day in Downtown Stockton as the Great Big Read gets underway.
The free event brings music, the arts, and of course, books, to children along with games, food, and other activities.
Stockton Community Services Deputy Director Suze Daveluy says every child will go home with a free book of their own.
“I have always said if you can get a child interested in reading and give them a fun experience around reading, they are much more likely to read on their own," says Daveluy. "And the more they want to read, the more they do, and then, of course, the better readers they’ll become and the better they’ll do in school.”
Local businesses, the Downtown Alliance, and the Stockton Library are sponsoring the event at the Janet Leigh Plaza in downtown Stockton from 11 to 2.
Just a few blocks away, 10,000 free books are up for grabs, from fiction to cookbooks.
The Big Free Library giveaway will be going on from 9 to 5 at the corner of North American and Channel Streets.
