The City of Sacramento has a list of three finalists for a new police chief.
The city received 33 applications for the job, which closed May 8. Assistant City Manager Arturo Sanchez says applicants must be a chief, or an assistant chief depending on the size of the department.
Sanchez said City Council members have submitted their ideas to City Manager Howard Chan.
"They have been partners with Howard in determining all of those aspects that we're looking for," Sanchez said. "So they have been a part of the process from that aspect. But, in terms of offering the position, negotiating, and making the appointment, that lies with the city manager's office."
The position has been vacant since December 2016. Sanchez expects a conditional offer to be made sometime around July 1.
Once an offer is made, the Department of Justice will perform a background check.
