A gunman fired at three Stockton police officers during an attempted traffic stop late Monday night. The attempted homicide had officers diving for cover.
Two officers tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation near Acacia and Lincoln Streets.
When the blue and red lights came on, one of the two people inside started firing out the window and the officers were pinned down and unable to return fire as the driver sped away.
A couple of blocks later a police sergeant gave chase.
Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones said the shooting is a reminder of the dangerous environment faced by officers daily.
“Fortunately, they were uninjured," Jones said. "At least two of the rounds struck the patrol car, one in the windshield, one in the passenger door, another round struck a nearby stop sign.”
The two suspects escaped and detectives have taken over the investigation.
