A top California Republican is formally ruling out a run for governor next year.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said on his Twitter feed Friday afternoon that he’ll serve out his second term at City Hall.
That leaves businessman John Cox, Assemblyman Travis Allen, and former NFL player Rosey Grier as the three Republicans in the race.
Four Democrats have said they’re in: Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Treasurer John Chiang, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and former state schools chief Delaine Eastin.
Under California’s open primary system, the top two candidates – regardless of political party – will advance to the November 2018 general election.
