(AP) - The city of Sacramento has agreed to pay $9.75 million to a couple whose 9-month-old son was killed when they were rear-ended by an unmarked police vehicle.
The Sacramento Bee reports Tuesday that Steve and Chrystal Saechao had gone through several miscarriages and the death of a newborn when they lost their first child, Raiden, in the December 2013 accident on Interstate 80.
Sgt. Greg Mark Halstead was driving a department-issued Ford Explorer at about 60 mph when he rammed into the Saechao's Toyota Scion, which had run into heavy traffic and stopped ahead of him. Raiden was secured in a child seat, but died from head trauma at a hospital several days later.
A call to the city for comment was not returned, and a lawyer for Halstead, who still works for the police department, declined comment.
