This weekend is the first of six when at least two lanes in each direction of the Pioneer Bridge section of Highway 50 will be closed.
Andy Alvarado with Caltrans says this will cause delays of up to an hour.
"The fortunate thing is we do have alternate routes, we have 80 which is helpful, and some of the other surface streets," Alvarado says.
Caltrans says drivers can also use I-5 to get around the area over the Sacramento River.
The weekend closures will start Friday night and end early Monday morning. Crews are also working weeknights.
They will be resurfacing the entire 1.2 mile stretch of the bridge and ramps.
The area was resurfaced two years ago, but the $6 million project began deteriorating soon after it was complete.
The $25 million project is expected to be complete by Labor Day.
