Stockton has become the first place in the nation to have a rapid transit bus route that is all electric. The new service starts Wednesday.
Stockton was the first in California to use hybrid diesel buses. Now comes the next step in reducing air pollution, all electric buses.
Bus route 44 from South Stockton to Downtown will be completely electric.
Proterra manufactures the buses and its President, Ryan Popple, says the nation is following Stockton’s lead.
“Almost every major fleet in the country is either deploying electric buses or is in the planning phase of it," says Popple. "The easiest thing to notice from the buses is there is zero local air pollution and there’s very little noise pollution.”
Popple says the electric buses Stockton has already deployed have saved the city about a million pounds of air pollution and 50 cents a mile on energy.
San Joaquin RTD plans to have an all-electric bus fleet by the year 2025.
