A hiker from Austria is being treated at the UC Davis Burn Center for treatment of major burns after he was struck by lighting near Donner Summit.
The victim, his girlfriend and a friend were hiking Tuesday when the victim went ahead of the other two at Tinker Knob near Soda Springs. The victim's girlfriend and their friend heard a crack and a flash of light. The victim was able to wave his arms and shout, prompting the other two to call for help. They stayed off the ridge where the victim was fearing another lightning strike.
The man was airlifted out by a CHP helicopter and taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee before being transferred to the burn center at UC Davis.
The CHP says the three were experienced hikers and saw no signs of thunderstorms or lightning during their hike.
