A Stockton park vandalized in June is seeing a rebirth as volunteers come together to fix the damage.
Calvary First Assembly Church opened Heroes Park on Kelly Drive in North Stockton with a basketball court in April, but vandals destroyed the backstop and work on the park stopped.
Local volunteers such as the Rotary Club and Lions stepped up with donations to help to put the park back together. It will reopen this weekend.
Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs said the park means a lot to a poor neighborhood that has seen its share of trouble.
"It’s important because the closest park to the kids who live in this community is 20 minutes away walking which is far, so now it’s giving something to the kids to do in their neighborhood and it’s also showing folks that we care about all of Stockton from the north to the south,” Tubbs said
Volunteers will put the finishing touches on a playground for the kids on Saturday, and have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park on Sunday.
