California Officer's Guns Stolen From Parked Car

(AP) - A thief stole two guns from a California police officer's SUV parked in a diner parking lot.

The Oakland Police said the break-in occurred Monday morning and the handguns belonged to a Taft police officer traveling on business. OPD declined to identify the officer and Taft police chief Ed Whiting didn't respond to an email request for comment.

The San Francisco sheriff fired a deputy earlier this month after his gun was stolen from a parked car. Police say that stolen gun was used in a gang-related slaying.

Meanwhile, jury selection for the trial of the man who fatally shot Kate Steinle in July 2015 with a stolen federal agent's gun is set to begin in San Francisco on Oct. 2.
